The results of a study of the electronic structure of indium monochloride layered crystals are reported. These findings are derived using a norm-conserving nonlocal pseudopotential. For the first time a diagram of band dispersion in the {\bf k}-space has been obtained from the {\em ab initio} selfconsistent calculations. A possible mechanism of optical transitions near the edge of fundamental absorption was examined and its polarization dependence was shown. The effective masses of charge carriers have been obtained for the most interesting points in the Brillouin zone. The genetic origin of valence bands and lower conduction bands was revealed.
