The original works of Max Planck devoted to the problem of spectral distribution of black body radiation are analyzed. The heuristic ideas and logical steps which 100 years ago led to the discovery of the quantum nature of the World are reproduced in chronological order. Further development of the quantum hypothesis and establishment of quantum mechanics are given in a retrospective sketch. The present-day possibilities of a deeper understanding of the nature of wave function are also mentioned.
