Photoionization of the different charging states in CdSe:Cu, CdS:Cu single crystals has been investigated by methods of the optical absorption, photoconductivity and barrier-layer photocurrent. Anisotropic character of the doped complex, which includes Cu$^{+}$, Cu$^{3+}$ ions is revealed. The compensation in CdSe:Cu, CdS:Cu single crystals by the Cu$^{+}$, Cu$^{3+}$ ions is determined.
