The stability conditions for four basic potentials have been found and analysed on the basis of the general Gibbs condition for the equilibrium one-component system. The consequences of these conditions, in particular, the properties of thermodynamic systems at stability boundaries, are examined. The obtained conditions of the critical state stability lead to spinodal and binodal merging at the critical point, so the binodal can be locally substituted for the spinodal there. The importance of stability conditions and their consequences for the substantiation of phase diagrams (in particular, $P$-$V$ and $T$-$S$ diagrams) in the critical region is emphasized.
