The X-ray luminescence, thermal emission and thermally stimulated depolarisation spectra as well as the influence of IR-illumination on the thermal emission and thermally stimulated depolarisation spectra of the PbI$_2$ and PbI$_2$:Zr crystals have been studied. There were found the hole traps in the PbI$_2$:Zr crystals that are absent in PbI$_2$. For the observed traps the activation energy has been calculated. The mechanisms describing the traps' nature and that of thermally stimulated depolarisation currents have been proposed on the basis of the obtained experimental results and literature analysis.
