In the paper, the procedure of the critical state examination according to the thermal equation of state is considered. The consideration has used stability conditions of an equilibrium thermodynamic system. It was proved that one can find a whole set of stabililty characteristics based on the information for $\npdiv{P}{V}{T}$, $\pdiv{T}{V}{P}$. The latter quantities are calculated directly from the thermal equation $P=P(T,V)$ and from the behaviour of $\pdiv{T}{S}{V}=\frac{T}{C_V}$. The procedure is applied to the investigation of isomorphic $γ\leftrightarrowα$ transition in metal cerium. The themal equation of state for cerium found as a two-band model approximation is used. The obtained behaviour of stability characteristics set enable us to conclude about the first type of critical behaviour in Ce according to a thermodynamic classification. The asymptotic behaviour of metal cerium is examined.
