The suggested earlier theory of nonuniform fluid of two-level atoms [J. Phys. Studies {\bf 1}, 402 (1997); J. Phys. Studies {\bf 9}, 156 (2005)] has been improved by taking into account the short-range order owing to short-range interactions. The changes in the vapour-liquid phase diagram, the density profile for planar interface, as well as the surface tension which are conditioned by going beyond a simple mean-field approximation are studied.
