Division of the Chair of Physics at the University of Lviv into the Chairs of Theoretical and Experimental Physics as reflected in documents

A. Rovenchak

The article presents a detailed chronology of the division of the Chair of Physics at the University of Lviv into the Chairs of Experimental and Theoretical Physics in 1872–73 based on official documents and historical sources of that period.
Following the establishment of the so-called utraquistic (bilingual Polish–Ukrainian) teaching at the University of Lviv in July 1871, there was a gradual outflow of German-speaking professors, who were replaced mostly by Polish-speaking scholars. After professor of physics Alois Handl left Lviv in September 1872, Tomasz Stanecki was appointed ordinary professor of physics in March 1873 and Oskar Fabian was appointed extraordinary professor of mathematical physics in September 1873. The creation of a chair (German: Lehrstuhl or Lehrkanzel; in modern terminology, the use of `department' rather than `chair' is preferred for this university unit) was associated with the appointment of a professor. The term `mathematical physics' corresponds to what we presently call `theoretical physics'. There were no separate appointments to the position of professor of experimental physics at that time. Therefore, after the appearance of professor of mathematical physics at the University, one can treat the position of professor of physics synonymous with professor of Experimental Physics.
Thus, one can consider 1873 as the year when the Departments of Experimental and Theoretical Physics at the University of Lviv were founded. Determination of more specific dates — either according to the permissions of the Emperor (4 March 1873 for Stanecki and 7 September 1873 for Fabian) or to the order of the Ministry of Education and Teaching (8 March and 14 September, respectively) — is a subject of a separate agreement.
