The optical characteristics of the HgBr and HgCl excilamps in the Hg$X_{2}$:$R$ ($X$ = Br, Cl, $R$ = He, Ne, Xe, N$_{2}$) mixtures depending on partial pressures of buffer gases, mercury dihalides vapors and time of the performance are investigated. The optimal conditions of luminescence of the HgBr$^{*}$ and HgCl$^{*}$ excimer molecules have been revealed at excitation by barrier discharge with the pump pulse repetition frequency of $f=1000$ Hz. The guidelines concerning obtaining a long-duration operation ($\sim 10^{7}$ pulses) of excimer lamps were given.
