The Department of Theoretical Physics was founded in 1872. Famous representatives of the scientific school include: Marian Smoluchowski, Stanisław Loria, Leopold Infeld, Wojciech Rubinowicz, Vasyl Milianczuk, Abba Glauberman, Samuil Kaplan, Ihor Yukhnovskii, Mykhailo Senkiv, Roman Gaida, Ihor Stasyuk, Lavrentiy Blazhyevskyi, Ivan Vakarchuk, Volodymyr Tkachuk.
Presently, the Department for Theoretical Physics conducts research in the following scientific fields: quantum information, quantum computers and quantum programming, quantum statistical physics, physical systems in quantized space, supersymmetry in quantum mechanics, classical inhomogeneous systems, history and philosophy of science, interdisciplinary studies.
The department organizes the annual scientific conference “Christmas Discussions” (January) and the Workshop on Current Problems in Physics (Zielona Góra, Poland – Lviv). It has links with scientists from Poland, Belgium, Austria, Slovakia, France, India.

Professor of the Department of Theoretical Physics of the Faculty of Physics, Khrystyna Gnatenko, received a Special Award for her contribution to the development of the city and country from the Lviv City Council as part of the celebration of Youth Day in the European Youth Capital.

As part of the celebration of the International Day of Engagement in Science for Sustainable Development, a lesson on quantum physics and quantum programming was held at the Irpin Lyceum of Innovative Technologies.
